iPhone Rival? Nokia Lumia 900 vs Apple iPhone 4S

The palpable buzz surrounding the new Nokia Lumia 900 has caught the attention of many in the industry. Some are even speculating that the Finnish smartphone is worthy of dethroning the Apple’s distinguished iPhone 4S as the best mobile device on the market. The following seeks to compare the two smartphones head to head.

Dimensions and Form

• Nokia Lumia 900 – 127.8 x 68.5 x 11.5 mm, 160 g
• Apple iPhone 4S – 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm, 140 g

The Nokia Lumia 900 is fitted with a larger screen and thus offers a slightly heftier build. The poly-carbonate frame feels lithe in your hand and smooth to the touch. The iPhone 4S is similarly balanced and evenly proportioned, but the chassis feels slightly more brittle.

Winner: Nokia Lumia 900

Display Screen

• Nokia Lumia 900 – 4.3 inch, 480 x 800 AMOLED touchscreen
• Apple iPhone 4S – 3.5 inch, 640 x 960 retina display

The Lumia 900 has been equipped with a brilliant 480 x 800 AMOLED touchscreen, which at 4.3 inches comes to a pixel density of 217 ppi. The richness of it colours and deep viewing angles are coupled with a surprisingly prolonged battery life. Nevertheless, the display is endowed with only a portion of the pixels offered on the iPhone’s 330 ppi retina display. Bright, colourful, and offering amazing clarity, the 3.5 inch, 640 x 960 screen is the gold standard for display technology.

Winner: Apple iPhone 4S

Processing Power

• Nokia Lumia 900 – 1.4GHz Scorpion CPU, 512MB RAM and Adreno 205 GPU
• Apple iPhone 4S – Dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A9 chipset, 512MB RAM with PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU

The dual-core A9 processor and accompanying GPU provides the iPhone 4S with the power to play video and games at high resolutions with little duress. The single core Scorpion is adequate but may grow increasingly underpowered as the slew of multi-core machines hits the market this year.

Winner: Apple iPhone 4S

Operating System

• Nokia Lumia 900 – Microsoft Windows Phone 7.5
• Apple iPhone 4S – iOS
The Mango version of the Windows Phone operating system has made great strides toward increasing security and ease of use. The burgeoning catalogue of apps on the Windows Phone Marketplace is allowing for greater customisation as well. However, the iPhone 4S still benefits from over half a million apps on the Apple App Store, and offers the combination of strong hardware and well written software that allows for an extremely malleable OS. In fact, the iOS platform provides the best of both worlds, utilising the simplicity of the Windows OS with the power of Android.

Winner: Apple iPhone 4S

Camera

• Nokia Lumia 900 – 8MP primary camera, 1.3MP secondary
• Apple iPhone 4S – 8MP primary camera, 0.3MP secondary

Both the iPhone 4S and the Lumia 900 feature 8 megapixel cameras, but the iPhone provides 1080p video recording whereas the Lumia is limited to 720p. The Nokia product does, on the other hand, provide a better front-facing secondary camera at 1.3 megapixels, technically higher than the iPhone which is limited to 480p.

Winner: Draw

Conclusion

Ultimately, the Nokia Lumia 900 is just one more competitor steamrolled by the juggernaut that is the Apple iPhone 4S. This is not to imply, however, that the Lumia 900 is not a capable device, and finding its own demographic will depend on its price point and the ability to transition the Windows brand to the mobile device arena. Shouldn’t we be comparing the Lumia 900 to iPhone4, NOT 4S? To the consumer, it will be a matter of comparing what they can get for the money involved. Both the Lumia 900 and iPhone 4 sell for the same price at AT&T. When a comparison is made between those phones, Lumia 900 is the obvious winner.

Nokia will compete effectively in two ways: 1) they will offer a better phone at various price points, and 2) the 4G capability of Nokia couple with the Windows platform will smoke the competition.

The Nokia is very much faster doing almost anything using wireless internet. That is a feature that the consumer will crave. Apple should be looking over their shoulder..
