There are a number of things that people need to consider, before they zero down on the scanner, which they would want to buy. There are several details that you need to look into, as you certainly would not want to spend a fortune on a device, which is good for nothing.

There are many versions of scanners available in the market, differing in price and quality. To start with, you’ll need to find out how often you’ll use the scanner and the kind of quality required from it.

Here are some tips and pointers to help you buy a scanner:-

Document Size

This is one of the most important criteria’s that the user must consider, during his or her purchase. Scanners come in different sizes, and the maximum document size that can be scanned on it will also vary accordingly. If you want to scan a large sized document, then it can be done in several parts, as it might not fit into the scanner as a whole.

These scanned images can then be put together by using various software applications like Photoshop. This can become quite cumbersome if you have to do it on a regular basis. Thus, it is recommended that you buy the right sized scanner, so that you can scan bigger documents, along with the standard sized ones.

Resolution

In case, you need a scanner for personal use where quality of resolution is not a primary concern, then you can opt for a low or medium resolution scanner. These can be used for books, magazines and other useful materials. On the other hand, if you are going to use it for your business purposes, then you could choose to buy a scanner with higher resolution. A model which has more than 600*600 per inch would be a good choice to begin with. You can also get more advanced models that have 1200*2400 dpi resolution.

Printer and Fax capabilities

Many scanners also come with printer and fax capabilities, which are perfect for office use. You can multitask with a single instrument, which also saves a lot of office space.

Color depth

The depth of colors is also a very important attribute of scanners and depending on your needs, you can choose from several models. Color depth refers to the amount of color the device is able to decipher and make outputs. Low-end scanners generally come with a color resolution of 24 bit, while the higher versions give you much better color depth of 48 bit. Besides, there are a few advanced models of scanners that offer a color resolution of 96 bit.

Taking all these measures into consideration, the users can identify the best scanner based on their needs. If a user is buying a scanner for general purposes, then a flatbed scanner can come quite handy. In case the scanner is required for more professional tasks, then the users can go for a slide scanner, long format scanner or a document scanner.
